Magnet options

Choose your preferred option for biasing the sample and the tip. We offer a vector electromagnet for maximum speed and biasing flexibility as well as several permanent magnet solutions for increased field biasing and enhanced stability.

Vector electromagnet

  • The low-noise, high-speed, temperature-stabilized design offers >80 mT in arbitrary directions with peak fields for specific directions >200 mT.
  • The vector electromagnet enables easy field sweeps and ramps for magnetizing samples, as well as optimization algorithms for alignment to the NV axis.
  • Its top is mounted 100 µm underneath the sample scanner and temperature controller by a water cooled circuit and a dedicated controller.
  • In combination with our wide microwave measurement band, the vector electro-magnet allows NV imaging over an extensive range of bias fields.

3D vector field biasing

The bias field can be generated in an arbitrary direction

of space, making it a true three dimensional vector field as opposed to other limited solutions.

Active feedback compensation

To reduce the reminescent hysteresis from the magnetic cores of the vector electromagnet, we offer a hall probe based feedback compensation as an optional upgrade. This allows to finely control the field direction and perform complex ramps of the bias field.

Movable permanent magnet

A three axis stage with several centimeters of range in all directions allows the user to move a permanent magnet below the sample in close proximity with the diamond tip. Magnetic bias fields up to several hundreds of millitesla can be achieved. Different magnet arrangements are available and interchangeable, allowing for fields up to 500 mT both in-plane and out-of-plane .

The QS3 software includes automated alignment routines to calibrate the trajectory of the magnet in space that keeps the magnetic field aligned with the NV axis. This empowers the user to specify field values in mT rather than stage positions.

If your samples require very strong bias fields, the permanent magnet may be the superior option.
